A Los Angeles-based TikToker has received plenty of positive online attention for her touching appeal to find the man who stole her car licence and returned it, after being robbed. After being robbed, a Los Angeles TikToker has garnered a ton of positive online comments after reaching out to find a homeless man who returned her car licence.

Sydney Sagehorn, a content creator, posted videos of her emotional reaction to a smash-and-grab theft of her handbag on the popular online platform, TikTok, after a robbery near Lake Hollywood, California. Sagehorn reportedly left her car parked when she went for a walk to the popular Wisdom Tree trail with friends, and her car was stolen. When she came back, she found one of the car’s windows had been broken, and her purse was gone.

Some of the items in the bag had been stolen, such as her wallet, driving licence, bank card, health insurance documents and personal belongings. The following days, Sagehorn was compelled to cancel her cards, contact the police and get the long process of obtaining new identification started.

This isn’t quite what happened, though, as a week later, Sagehorn received a letter in the mail with her lost driver’s licence. With it was a handwritten note from a man who identified himself as homeless, named David Manning. The note says Manning picked up the licence near a motorway off-ramp as he was panhandling and then mailed it to the address on the ID.

The gesture really touched Sagehorn, especially seeing indications that Manning had paid for this posting himself. She was given the licence on a postal receipt for stamps, which she reported was an effort by a stranger who had helped her, and she was struck by the effort.

After the act of kindness, Sagehorn turned to TikTok to find out where Manning was to let him express his gratitude to him in person. Her videos were soon noticed, and the audience applauded the generosity and honesty of the homeless man, despite his own hardships. The TikToker has said that being there has caused her to rethink some of her assumptions about homelessness and opened her eyes to new perspectives on the people who are homeless.

When asked about the incident, Sagehorn emphasised the importance of empathy, saying the incident made it clear to her  that “your homeless neighbour is still your neighbour.” She is allegedly now in the vicinity of the note’s location and has reached out to local mutual aid groups to try to locate him, but as yet has no luck.

Many people have praised Manning for his kind actions, and the story has been widely shared on social media platforms, where people have expressed their gratitude for his kindness. The encounter has been an eye-opening experience, as an upsetting crime has been replaced by a positive message of human decency that will stick with Sagehorn’s search as it continues.
