American Primeval: Netflix’s Gritty New Western Delves into the Dark History of the American

1 Mins read

Netflix’s new miniseries, American Primeval, premiered on January 9, 2025, and has quickly garnered attention for its gritty portrayal of the American West during a tumultuous period.

The six-episode series is directed by Peter Berg and written by Mark L. Smith, known for his work on The Revenant.

It gathers complex interactions among various groups, including the U.S. Army, Mormon settlers, and Native American tribes, set against the backdrop of the Utah War of 1857.

The story centres on a mother and her son who are fleeing their past and seeking safety in a lawless land. They encounter unexpected allies and face brutal conflicts that reflect the harsh realities of frontier life.

Taylor Kitsch stars as Isaac Reed, leading a cast that includes Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, Dane Dehaan, and Kim Coates, who portrays Brigham Young, a key historical figure in the series.

Berg describes American Primeval as a “big swing,” emphasizing its aim to immerse viewers in an intense survival story. He stated, “We are going into the belly of the beast,” highlighting the series’ commitment to authenticity and emotional depth.

The plot is not merely fictional; it draws inspiration from real events such as the Mountain Meadows Massacre, where approximately 120 pioneers were killed by Mormon militia members and their Paiute allies. This incident is depicted in the series’ opening episode.

The show has been noted for its unflinching depiction of violence and cultural conflict. Critics have pointed out that it spares no detail in portraying the grim realities faced by settlers and Indigenous peoples during this chaotic period.

This series aims to provide a nuanced examination of the sacrifices made by individuals caught in these violent confrontations over land and power.

Despite its ambitious storytelling and strong production team, American Primeval has received mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an approval rating of 56%, indicating a divided reception among critics.

While some praise its cinematography and performances, others criticize its pacing and narrative choices.

As viewers engage with American Primeval, they are invited to reflect on the historical complexities of America’s westward expansion. The series challenges audiences to consider the harsh realities of survival in a newly formed nation where lawlessness reigned supreme.

American Primeval aims to carve out its place in the landscape of modern television storytelling.
