Argentina’s easy 4-1 derby victory over Brazil secures their 2026 World Cup spot: Highlights and goals

Argentina v Brazil: Argentina won a stunning 4-1 victory in Buenos Aires as they hosted Brazil in the 2026 South American World Cup Qualifiers. Check out all the highlights and goals here.

The highly anticipated CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup Qualifiers match between Argentina and Brazil ended in a historic landslide. Argentina, which had already earned its spot in the World Cup, won handily and controlled the game.

With goals from Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, and Giuliano Simeone, the defending champions startled Brazil with their attacking prowess. Brazil, on the other hand, found it difficult to match Argentina’s constant pressure and only scored through Matheus Cunha.

Although the Seleção made several efforts to retaliate, they were eventually outmatched and could not cope with Argentina’s zeal.

Argentina (31 points), Uruguay (21 points), and Ecuador (23 points) have already guaranteed their places in the 2026 World Cup, while Brazil is presently in fourth place with 21 points.

To strengthen its position as the qualification fight heats up, Brazil will need to recover in the next games.

Bolivia’s important qualifier against Uruguay ended in a stalemate, making Argentina the first South American nation to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday.

Following Bolivia’s 0-0 home loss to Uruguay, the defending world champions, who will play their bitter rivals Brazil in Buenos Aires later on Tuesday, punched their ticket without a single kick.

Bolivia now has 14 points from 14 games, which puts them in seventh place in the South American qualification standings.

Argentina, who lead the standings with 28 points after 13 games, will automatically qualify for the playoffs and finish in the top six with just four games left for Bolivia.

A win over Uruguay was necessary for Bolivia, which is still vying for a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs, to keep Argentina from qualifying.

However, a sequence of saves by Uruguay custodian Sergio Rochet upset the Bolivians despite creating a number of opportunities.

With 21 points from 14 games, Uruguay is now in fourth place in the standings and still very much on track to qualify for the World Cup.

Six South American countries will automatically qualify for the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as a result of the World Cup’s expansion to 48 participants for next year.

After winning the World Cup in 1978, 1986, and 2022, Argentina will now aim for their fourth trophy.

Brazil was humbled 4-1 by Argentina, their fierce rivals

In Tuesday’s South American World Cup qualifying match, Brazil was thrashed 4-1 by fierce rivals Argentina, and manager Dorival Jr. was under increasing pressure after his team was well outplayed and lucky not to lose by a larger margin.

Brazil came falling back to earth against the world champions after defeating Colombia 2-1 at home on Thursday. Julian Alvarez’s close-range goal four minutes after kickoff gave the world champions the lead.

Alvarez beat the advancing custodian Bento with a soft touch to his right after stealing a through pass from Thiago Almada in his stride and avoiding two opponents.

“We humbly did our job and played a great game. We gave them a show,” Alvarez told reporters.

“It was a historic result, winning by 4-1, and that makes us proud. I’m so happy for the fans, for helping the team, and to see how we played an impressive game at home. It’s great to know that we are qualified for the World Cup.”

Argentina, which had not lost to Brazil in six years, missed multiple opportunities to increase their lead before Giuliano Simeone, a replacement, scored in the 71st minute to give Brazil their worst loss in a World Cup qualifying match.
