The Champions League champions, Paris Saint-Germain, began their Club World Cup campaign with a 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, another European powerhouse, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday.
PSG showed no symptoms of rust in their first game since defeating Inter 5-0 to win their first Champions League trophy last month, and they took the lead when Fabián Ruiz scored from distance in the 19th minute.
Just before halftime, PSG extended their lead after a counterattack orchestrated by Vitinha under a sunny southern California sky after Antoine Griezmann missed.
Julián Alvarez’s goal in the 57th minute gave the La Liga team the appearance of a comeback, but it was disallowed when a VAR review revealed Koke had fouled Désiré Doué before scoring.
Any chances of an Atletico Madrid comeback were dashed in the 87th minute when substitute Senny Mayulu gave PSG a third goal, and Lee Kang-in completed the scoring with a penalty kick in stoppage time. In the 78th minute, Clément Lenglet was substituted for Atlético.
Bayern Munich 10-0 Auckland City
In their tournament debut, Bayern Munich easily defeated Auckland City thanks to a hat-trick from Jamal Musiala in just 17 minutes.
For the Bundesliga champions, Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman, and Michael Olise each scored two goals. Coman’s goal six minutes in gave them the lead. Shots on goal were 17-1 in favour of Bayern.
After bouncing back from a hamstring injury, Musiala made his first appearance since April, replacing Harry Kane in the 61st minute. He opened the scoring in the 67th minute, scored again in the 84th, and converted a penalty in the 73rd.
Palmeiras 0-0 Porto
Sunday night’s inaugural match of the Club World Cup between Palmeiras and two-time European champion Porto ended in a 0-0 draw in front of 46,275 spectators at MetLife Stadium, which was slightly over half filled.
Porto qualified as the 2021 Copa Libertadores champion, while Palmeiras, Brazil’s club champion in 2022 and 2023, qualified as the tournament’s fifth-ranked eligible team across four years.
Palmeiras had a 55.3% possession rate and a 17-11 shooting lead. With 19 shots and six on goal, Palmeiras had a little advantage over FC Porto, who had 14 and two goals in response.
With 21 fouls called against them compared to 12 against the Portuguese, the Brazilian team was the most aggressive one. Despite their best efforts in extra time, Palmeiras was unable to defeat FC Porto custodian Ramos, who recorded four stops.
Man of the match Vitinha told DAZN it was a “very good performance” by his side.
“We did a very good game, it is difficult with this temperature. We did well against a tough team; we controlled the game. We are happy with the result,” he said.
