The Golden Globes 2025: Emilia Perez and The Brutalist Dominate the Night

The 2025 Golden Globe Awards, held on January 5, celebrated the best in film and television, showcasing diverse talent and productions.

This year’s ceremony, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, marked a significant moment as she became the first woman to host the event solo. This night was filled with excitement, highlighting established stars and emerging talents. 

Top Film Winners

A spectacular finish as Hollywood legend Nicolas Cage stepped up to present the award for Best Film.

Cage revealed the nominees for one of the evening’s most eagerly awaited categories: Anora, Challengers, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked.

The standout film, Emilia Perez, led the nominations with ten nods and secured the award for Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy.

Director Karla took a heartfelt acceptance speech; she proclaimed, “Light will always triumph over darkness… You can imprison us. You can harm us. But you can never strip us of our spirit. Speak out…I am who I am, not who you wish me to be.” 

Its star, Zoe Saldana, also won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, while Kieran Culkin took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in A Real Pain.

Meanwhile, The Brutalist claimed the award for Best Motion Picture-Drama, with Adrien Brody winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama for his role in the same film. 

Television Highlights

In television, The Bear received the most nominations, totalling five. It was recognized for its excellence in comedy, while Shogun and Only Murders in the Building also garnered significant attention with multiple nominations.

Selena Gomez’s performance in Only Murders in the Building earned her a nomination, further solidifying her status as a leading actress. 

Notable Awards and Remarks in the Award

Viola Davis was honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her outstanding contributions to film, while Ted Danson received the Carol Burnett Award for his impact on television.

In her hosting remarks, Glaser emphasized her desire to create a celebratory atmosphere, stating, “I’m not out for blood. I want everyone to have a good night.”

This year’s ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the increasing diversity within Hollywood.

Indican filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s nomination for her film All We Imagine as Light was particularly noted as a significant recognition of international cinema. 

As the awards season progresses, the Golden Globes set a high bar for future ceremonies.

The combination of celebrated films like Emilia Perez and The Brutalist, alongside standout performances from actors across various genres, promises an exciting year ahead in entertainment.
