Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, famously known for her role as San Chai in the beloved series Meteor Garden, has tragically passed away at the age of 48.

Her family confirmed the heartbreaking news on February 3, 2025, after succumbing to pneumonia, which developed after contracting the flu during a family trip to Japan for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Hsu’s sister, Dee Hsu, expresses her sorrow emotionally. “My dearest sister Barbie has unfortunately left us after getting pneumonia triggered by influenza. I will always be grateful to her sister in this lifetime.”

Dee expressed her gratitude for the moments they shared and emphasized that she will always remember Barbie fondly.

Dee Hsu also said in a statement shared by her manager, “During the Lunar New Year, or family came to Japan for vacation. My dearest sister Barbie has unfortunately left us after getting pneumonia, triggered by influenza.”

The actress’s health had been a concern in recent years, as she had previously dealt with epilepsy and related complications. Despite not acting in dramas since 2012, Barbie remained a public figure, occasionally attending family events and social gatherings.

She focused on her personal life and raising her two children, a 10-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son, whom she shared with her ex-husband, Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei.

Barbie Hsu was married to South Korean artist DJ Koo Jun Yup whom she wed in 2022 after her divorce from Wang Xiaofei in 2021. Her family confirmed that she was on vacation with them when her health took a sudden turn for the worse.

“Thank you all for your concern! During our family trip to Japan, my kind sister contracted influenza-associated pneumonia.” Dee reiterated in her statement.

The news of Barbie’s death has sent shockwaves through social media, with fans and colleagues expressing their condolences and sharing memories of the actress. Many remember her not just as a talented actress but also as a singer and TV host who inspired countless fans throughout her career.

In addition to Meteor Garden, Barbie starred in other popular dramas such as Mars and Summer’s Desire, solidifying her status as a household name in Taiwan.

Her contributions to the entertainment industry extended beyond acting; she was also known for her work as a singer and television host alongside her sister Dee.

Barbie Hsu leaves behind a legacy and warmth that touched many lives. As tributes come in from around the world, her family is grateful for the love and support during this difficult time. ” Rest in peace! Love you always,” Dee concluded, reflecting the affection shared between the sisters.
